Former BlackBerry CEO Jim Balsillie has issued an “urgent message” to Prime Minister Mark Carney, warning that Canada faces serious risks from U.S. data and digital trade policies. In his letter, Balsillie cautioned that Canada’s digital sovereignty could be undermined if federal leaders fail to assert stronger data protection measures in upcoming trade negotiations. He argued that U.S. policy frameworks favor large technology firms and may compromise Canadians’ privacy, innovation capacity, and control over national data resources. Balsillie, now a prominent advocate for digital rights and innovation policy, urged Ottawa to take a more assertive stance in defending domestic digital infrastructure and to implement new safeguards for data governance. His warning comes amid growing global concern over cross-border data flows and the dominance of U.S. tech giants. Analysts say Balsillie’s message reflects a broader call for Canada to define its digital future independently and strategically.
