ll

On November 19, 2020, Andrea Mrozek, a senior fellow with Cardus Family, testified on the issue of child care policy before the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women. “Child care is the care of a child, no matter who does it. Child care is not only a women’s issue but also a family issue and ought to be treated as such. We have across Canada a tremendous and beautiful diversity of care options available, care that is both done and chosen by families according to their own cultures, customs, traditions and work needs." Transcript :00
we're at the early stages of
00:01
construction in the center block in the
00:03
parliament welcome center
00:05
a really exciting phase of any project
00:07
right at the beginnings
00:08
so we are doing the demolition and
00:11
abatement work of the interior spaces of
00:13
the center block
00:15
doing the excavation work for the new
00:17
parliament welcome center
00:18
and soon we'll be starting the
00:19
restoration of the heritage masonry
00:22
of this building it's a really exciting
00:25
phase of the project and in parallel
00:27
we're now down to the final strokes and
00:30
finishing off
00:31
the future uses of the building the
00:33
conservation strategy
00:34
and the design elements in what is
00:37
undoubtedly the most important building
00:39
in canada
00:40
and one of the most important spaces
00:42
globally but it's incredible
00:44
the opportunity to see the center block
00:47
with fresh eyes
00:48
as you get to the uh see the the
00:51
sculptures
00:52
and carvings up close and touch them uh
00:56
to be able to get to the
00:57
ceiling of the house chamber and the
00:59
senate chamber
01:00
it's really uh quite incredible so my
01:03
position as dominion sculptor
01:05
is is to continue the ongoing sculpture
01:10
program that the architect
01:11
john pearson had in mind for the
01:13
building and that is to
01:15
his intention was to leave hundreds of
01:18
of uncarved blocks within the the space
01:21
so that those blocks could be carved and
01:23
sculpted to interpret canadian history
01:25
as it evolved
01:27
and the work is continuing to go on
01:29
today what's amazing it really is you're
01:31
you're it really puts you in touch with
01:33
the work that was done by people in the
01:35
past it's it's like
01:37
connecting to a hundred years of
01:38
sculptural history i mean this is
01:40
it's a the building itself inside is an
01:43
artwork that has been
01:44
in the making for a hundred years and
01:48
you're part of it it's like you're
01:49
picking up your predecessor's brush or
01:51
picking up the materials it's
01:52
it's an amazing feeling project is
01:54
coming along great
01:56
the excavation is right on track the
01:59
demolition and abatement
02:00
is is on track we've we've removed about
02:03
5 000 truckloads of rock
02:06
from the what will be the new parliament
02:08
welcome center
02:09
at the end we'll be removing about 50
02:11
000 of those truckloads
02:13
uh we're about 40 percent completed the
02:16
demolition and abatement phase of the
02:19
the interior so starting from the sixth
02:22
floor
02:23
and from the basement and working down
02:25
to those high heritage
02:27
spaces like the the chamber floor so
02:30
starting from those areas with the lower
02:32
heritage elements
02:33
but taking great care even there all of
02:36
the marble
02:37
and wood being carefully disassembled
02:40
cataloged and stored
02:41
and then taking out the
02:44
asbestos-containing material at this
02:46
point we've removed about five and a
02:47
half
02:48
million pounds of asbestos containing
02:50
material
02:51
and that's being carefully taken away to
02:53
special
02:54
uh containment sites uh
02:58
and everything on this project is being
03:00
done with a tremendous amount of care
03:02
and with the uh with the objective of
03:05
getting this right
03:06
so that it works for a modern parliament
03:09
and
03:09
21st century and beyond and makes
03:12
generations of canadians proud into the
03:16
future
