.Toronto-area MP Michael Ma is now a Liberal, putting the party just 1 seat shy of a majority government. The Liberal House leader says he's spoken with Conservatives who feel frustrated, and could join Ma in the Liberal benches.
.
Let's give a warm welcome to our newest
and ever liberal party, Michael.
With that, the Liberals get their 171st
MP of this parliament, moving them to
within one seat of a majority
government. Michael Ma leaves the
Conservative caucus and joins the
Liberals making his debut at the annual
Liberal Christmas Party. Ma's defection
came as a shock even to those close to
him from within his own writing.
If he can contribute more to Canada,
regardless which party, I think it's
move, but of course it's not for
personal interest. It just be for the
interest Canada as a nation. Ben Long
helped run Ma's campaign this spring and
says he called him right after the news
broke, but Ma said all the reasons for
the switch are in a statement released
by the Liberal Party. In that statement,
Ma says Carney's offering a steady
practical approach and the move was in
accordance with what people in Markham
Unionville told him. But that's not
necessarily how every voter there feels.
This woman says, "Of course, Ma's free
to pick his own party affiliation, but
says Ma needs to give constituents a
concrete reason for the switch." This
man says he's not convinced Carney
offers what Ma said.
So far, the prime minister hasn't do
what he's supposed to do with the the
the Donald Trump issues. He just like uh
you know, just just gave in. So, I don't
think, you know, I mean, I don't think
he should be prime minister at all. Ma
is the second conservative to cross the
floor this year. Nova Scotia's Chris
Daltramol joined the Liberals in
November. Later that same week, Alberta
MP Matt Generu, who was rumored to be
considering a switch, announced his
resignation. Liberal House leader Steven
McKinnon says he's talked to more
Conservative MPs ready to switch.
They are required every day to go
through this charade of obstruction. and
you see it, you know, repeating the same
question 40 times in the House of
Commons every day. Um, that is not a
that is a soul destroying experience for
many conservative members of parliament.
On social media, Conservative leader
Pierre Polyv posting that Ma has let
down those who elected him to fight for
an affordable future and join the party
he was elected to oppose. Polyv faces a
leadership review in January in Ottawa.
